BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) was founded in 1916 as an aircraft engine manufacturer and began producing motorcycles in 1923 and automobiles in 1928. The company is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and has built a reputation for sport-oriented luxury vehicles, particularly its rear-wheel-drive sedans and its long-running use of inline-six engines. Notable technologies include the i brand of electric vehicles introduced in 2013 with the i3, the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and early commercial adoption of turbocharging and variable valve timing (VANOS). BMW also owns the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands and produces motorcycles under the BMW Motorrad division.
