Isuzu Motors traces its origins to 1916, when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering began a vehicle manufacturing venture, making it one of Japan's oldest automakers. The company adopted the Isuzu name, taken from a river in Ise, in 1949, and it built a global reputation centered on commercial trucks and diesel engine technology. Notable achievements include the 1933 introduction of Japan's first air-cooled diesel engine and decades of diesel production, including engines supplied to other manufacturers such as General Motors. After withdrawing from North American passenger vehicle sales in 2009, the company focuses on trucks, the D-Max pickup line, and diesel powertrains sold worldwide.
