The 1999 Frontier was the first year of the redesigned second-generation D22 model, introducing the 3.3L VG33E V6 engine in place of the previous 3.0L V6, along with a new Crew Cab body style. The VG33E uses a timing belt with a recommended replacement interval of roughly 105,000 miles, and the water pump is commonly replaced at the same time. Common service items include valve cover gasket and rear main seal leaks, oxygen sensor replacement, and inspection of the frame and bed for rust. Four-wheel-drive models may also need attention to the front axle actuator and wheel bearings over time.
